Make this easy Kefir drink at home
Categories: Health| Recipes

To make this easy Kefir drink we love to use Gippsland Jersey whole milk. Kefir is a healthy probiotic drink that, when used in conjunction with prebiotics like Cider Tonic, can help restore balance in the gut and aids digestion.

What is Kefir?

Kefir is a fermented milk drink, that is made by adding Kefir grains to whole cows or goats milk. Kefir grains are not cereal grains though. They are made up of yeast and lactic acid bacteria that resemble grains. When the grains are added to whole milk and is left to ferment for 24 hours, it becomes the yogurt drink that we enjoy.

Why drink Kefir?

Kefir is teeming with beneficial gut probiotics and for an added bonus the fermentation process also aids in making dairy more digestible.

Kefir:

*Contains a unique carbohydrate called Kefiran which has antibacterial properties
* includes the probiotic Lactobacillus kefiri, which is only present in Kefir
*Is High in calcium, but low in lactose (its possible to make lactose free versions)
*Contains many as 61 strains of bacteria and yeast, depending on quality of milk
*has Protein, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, Roboflavin (B2), magnesium and Vitamin D
*Is only 100 calories!!

Health benefits include:

*Can improve bone health
*Lower risk of osteoporosis
*Antibacterial properties
*Stronger probiotic properties than regular yogurt to enhance digestion and gut health
*Stimulates immune system
*Alleviates allergy and asthma symptoms

Its easy to make Kefir at home.

With the right ingredients and equipment you will be on your way to making a stress free milk Kefir which really is super easy. Kefir is thinner in consistency then yoghurt and many people enjoy it as a beverage. Its especially tasty when blended with frozen berries. In our home we like to use Kefir in place of natural yoghurt.

Need a Kefir kit?

You can start with a basic set up of a glass jar, plastic strainer & muslin cloth, but l found it a little messy to do. After my first week of making Kefir l was on the hunt online for a better solution.

Here is the recipe from Nourish Me Organics.

After much research l found Kefirco kit.I can highly recommend the Kefirco kit for making your Kefir. It is the only piece of equipment you are going to need.. I am all for a well made stylish kitchen equipment that is designed to do exactly what it is suppose to, so I do not buy kits like this lightly, it was a considered purchase.

Kefir is thinner in consistency then yoghurt and many people enjoy it as a beverage. Its especially tasty when blended with frozen berries. In our home we like to use kefir in place of natural yoghurt. For example when I make naan bread I swap out the yoghurt for kefir. Check out my go to Thermomix naan breads recipe here. For breakfast we add it to a bowl of grain free granola & top with our delicious stewed apple tonic. This is a great way to set yourself up to start your day in a gut loving way.

Enjoy!

Remember that taking Cider Tonic as a prebiotic that sets your gut up to receive beneficial yeast and bacteria like Kefir gives your body an immense advantage against all sort of ailments and boosts the immune system greatly. Drinking Kefir is a daily ritual we enjoy immensely and can recommend that you get some high quality local milk and make some for yourself.
